Early Settlers
Town of Lebanon

Early settlers in the Town of Lebanon taken from 1784 "History of
Chenango & Madison Counties, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880.
[Tried to use year, where stated, person and where they were from.]

Lebanon was formed from Hamilton Feb. 6, 1807. It was one of the six
towns originally patented to Col. William S. SMITH, who soon after
transferred the major portion of it to Sir William PULTNEY, reserving,
however, a large tract bordering the Chenango. There were, therefore, two
agencies active in promoting the settlement of the lands in this town...

In 1791
Joshua SMITH, a native of Franklin, Conn., settled but
subsequently moved to Riga, Monroe county.
Col. Willilam S. SMITH sent brother, Justus B., to act as agent
for sale of lands and he, together with brothers John and James
and five sisers, joined him in the settlement. They were natives
of Long Island.
