Time stands still in the hamlet of Peterboro. Come for a day, wander
through Confederate and Union camps and listen to the stories of the men and
women. Watch them drill for the battle. Hear the sounds of the past.
On June 10th and 11th, the Smithfield Community Association and the Town of
Smithfield will hold the eighth annual Civil War Weekend. This event is used
to raise money to preserve Peterboro's historic buildings and sites.
Peterboro invites everyone to visit and experience what life was like 140
years ago. After visiting the soldiers camps enjoy the music, drama,
storytelling, and period craft demonstrations. Treat yourself to penny candy
at the General Store and browse the many Civil War books for adults and
children. On the village green, watch the children test their skills in sack
races and tug- a -war. Bring your letter to town, the post office will have
a special event postal cancellation stamp. Take a narrated walking tour of
our historic village, the home of the famous abolitionist Gerrit Smith. You
will walk the very streets that Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, John
Brown, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton have walked. To find out
more about why these well know reformers came to our little hamlet, visit
the museum and the historic Land Office.
Every afternoon, hear the sound of cannons booming and muskets cracking.
The smoke of gun powder will rise as the north and south face off for a
very realistic battle reenactment.
On Saturday evening you can hear fiddle music drifting out from the
historic Smithfield Community Center. The reenactors and their families
dress up in their finest and dance the dances of long ago. The public is
invited to dress up or come as you are and join in, from 8 to 11 PM. Dance
admission is $2.00. On your way home, drive along the green and see the
fires scattered throughout the camps, reminding us of the past.
Come to the firehouse Sunday morning from 8 to 11AM for a great all you
can eat pancake breakfast. Then stop by the green across from the General
Store and go to the church service with the troops around 11:00 AM.
Gates open at 10 AM each morning, Saturday till 5 PM and Sunday till 4PM.
Admission $5.00 adults, 6-12 $2.00, 5 and under free, with plenty of free
