Early settlers in the Town of Stockbridge taken from 1784 History of Chenango &
Madison Counties, NY by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where stated,
person and where they were from.
Stockbridge was formed from Vernon & Augusta, in Oneida county, and Smithfield &
Lenox in Madison county, May 20, 1836, & named from the Stockbridge Indians who
were the owners & occupants of most of the town at a former day.
1791-
first settlement-Nathan EDSON & sons John, Barney & Calvin, from N.H.
about 1796 or '97-
Oliver STEWART, from Washington county
Jonathan SNOW, from same neighborhood as Nathan Edson
William SLOAN, from Washington county.
George BRIDGE, from Washington county, and
James TAFT, from Washington county (didn't remain here long)
Benajah HOUSE, from Conn. (he returned east & went to Ohio)
Matthew RANKIN, from the East
